There are 11 business categories and 11 taste categories available to enter for the 2018 awards.

 

The awards are free to enter and breweries are invited to enter as many categories in the programme as they wish.

 

Please note that in order to be eligible to submit your product into a taste category, at least one business category must also be entered.

 

This year’s entry process will require you to register your intention to enter by Thursday 22nd March 2018. For more information on this please contact pippa@kdmedia.co.uk.

 

Following registration, entry forms must be completed for each category.  Entry forms are available to download for each business category below.

Entrants will have until 12 Noon on Friday 27th April 2018 to submit entries in any of the 11 business categories.

Scottish Brewery of the Year

Scottish Brewery of the Year

 

 

 

 

 

The ultimate award in the competition, this award is open to entry for breweries of any size which can demonstrate the design and implementation of a successful brewery in 2018.

The Scottish Brewery of the Year will be able to demonstrate outstanding business growth, product quality, contribution to the community, positive environmental impact, investment in people, collaborative relationships with suppliers and customers and best practices shared across the industry.

Taste performance of entered beers will also be considered when judging this category.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• A detailed overview of business success in the period 1 April 2017 – 31 May 2018 including full financial statistics and/or trading figures for the last two years and predicted future year figures

• Evidence of any major milestones through the year such as new distribution deals, export success or new investment

• Short description on the approaches to staff development, product quality, community contribution, environmental credentials and
collaborative relationships with industry peers, suppliers and customers

Beer of the Year

This is one of the most coveted awards of the competition, however it is not open for entry.

The winning beer will be chosen by the judges during a blind tasting of the highest performers in
each of the above taste categories on judging day.

The Beer of the Year 2018 will be announced at the celebration event on Thursday 27th September.

Master Brewer of the Year

To help preserve the cherished art of the master brewer, and to raise awareness for this important role, the judges will present this award to Scotland’s most outstanding master brewer in 2018.

Combining the flair of production, design, operations, sales, and quality control, entrants should be able to demonstrate excellence throughout their dedicated career in brewing.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• Full biography and career history and current roles and responsibility at the brewery

• A description of key highlights of the period 1 March 2017 to 1 April 2018 and details of any milestones

• Supporting statements from colleagues and business associates

Emerging Brewer of the Year

This new award will recognise the best emerging talent in the brewing sector and seeks to reward an outstanding individual who shows great promise for the future.

The individual will demonstrate exceptional ability, passion and enthusiasm at an early point in their brewing career. Judges will be looking for an individual who has directly impacted a brewing business through delivery of positive change, continuous improvement or new successful products.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• A detailed biography of the individual nominated

• A description of key highlights of the period 1 March 2016 to 1 April 2018

• Achievements by the business that can be directly attributable to the individual nominated

• Evidence of demonstration of new thinking, creativity and flair, while respecting impact on the community, environment, safety and consumer values

Breakthrough Brewery

This category will recognise a brewery that has been trading for a maximum of three years and that has shown fast paced growth during this period. The judges will be looking for a young brewery, working very hard to make their mark in a crowded space and
differentiating their business. The brewery will have a clear vision, a sound business strategy showing plans for continued growth and a talented and passionate team dedicated to achieving success to stand out in this exciting category.

The award is open for entry to breweries of any size that have opened for business after 1 January 2015.

To qualify for consideration in this category, at least one other business category must be entered and product must be submitted into at least one taste category.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• A detailed overview of business success in the period leading up to and following opening and business plans for the next 12 months

• Insight into product development, recruitment, quality control, premises, branding, distribution, sales and marketing

• Descriptions and taste profiles of available beers

• Full financial accounts and / or trading figures since opening

This category recognises the efforts of a brewery to tap into the rising demand for premium beer products.  Judges will be looking for a high performing Scottish brewery which can demonstrate sales success, an increase in product development, an indication of new job creation within the business and solid financial results.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• Sales statistics for the period 1 March 2017 – 1 April 2018 and a comparison on the year previous

• Evidence of product development plans and future plans for growth

• Evidence of any new business investment in new job creation, product or premises

• Reference to 2 years’ annual financial results, most recently audited and predicted

Innovation of the Year

This award will recognise the development of innovative practice in any aspect of beer production, distribution, sales and marketing by Scottish brewing companies.

The judges will be looking for a unique and  brand new method, idea or product introduced to any part of the Scottish brewing business.

GUIDELINES:
Entrants should describe the innovation in a written entry including:

• Background to the innovation and a description of its design, purpose and outcomes

• A description of the business, its products and biographies of the management team responsible for the innovation

• Evidence of success of the innovation and its positive impact on the business

With exports of Scottish beer on the rise, this award will recognise the exporting success of a Scottish brewery and its success securing deals to distribute to other UK/ Ireland markets and overseas.

Entries should include the following:

• A description of the quantity and volume exported in the period 1 March 2017 – 1 April 2018

• A description of the export strategy, including participating countries, partners involved in the process and indication of future plans for export in the period starting 1 May 2017

• Evidence of overseas sales success

The creation of new high quality beers is one of the most important factors in determining the future success of a brewery.  New beers which strike a balance between breaking new ground and responding to the demands of the consumer can form the basis of great success.

This award will recognise the efforts of a brewery to invest in new product development by delivering a programme of new beer launches in 2017 and supporting this with an experienced and creative team.

GUIDELINES
Entries should include the following:

• A description of new beers created in 2017 and 2018 explaining their concept and development including flavour, branding and any launch activity

• A description of the approach to delivering high quality in production

• A detailed biography of the management team, including the master brewer

• Evidence of commercial success of the new products launched

This category brings together the vitally important roles of branding, packaging and marketing and its ability to convert into sales success.

The judges will be looking for a strategic approach to branding and marketing and direct evidence of sales success. This may relate to one of a number of products.

• A description of the marketing activity including evidence of advertising, media relations, social media and events

• A description of the approach to branding and packaging and its role in the creation of new products

• A description of sales success as it relates to the marketing carried out

A number of specialist craft beer bars has rejuvenated the licensed trade with new venues vying for customers with an exciting range of beers, a calendar of events and promotions.
This award will recognise the efforts of a pub or bar making a significant effort to stock, sell and promote Scottish beers leading to a successful pub or bar which has an engaged and educated customer base.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• A description of the bar’s concept and activity in the period March 2017 – April 2018 including beers stocked, special offers and events and promotions

• A detail of any investment in the premises in fit out costs, bar styling or recruitment

• A description of sales success for the premises related to the same time period

There are a wide range of dedicated beer events on offer throughout the year have the ability to showcase the best of Scottish brewing and further educate the consumer.

This award will recognise the efforts of an event organiser or company for the creation of an event or festival that best showcases Scottish beer and contributes to increased visibility of breweries and beers to consumers.

GUIDELINES:
Entries should include the following:

• A description of the background to the creation of the event and an outline of the event’s concept

• A description of the marketing activity relative to sales success for the event for the period 1 March 2017 to 28 February 2018

• A description of the success of the event evidenced by ticket sales, media coverage, corporate sponsorship or testimonials from
producers

The Beer Destination of the Year will be presented to an exciting venue which has delivered new revenue streams for a brewing business.

• A description of the visitor experience including tourist attractions, tours, restaurants or bars which are open for business in 2018

• Details of marketing activity aimed at securing visitor numbers and evidence of success including visitor numbers

• Evidence of any accolades or key achievements which support the success of the destination
